What do you tell your 6 year old child about brushing their teeth everyday? Something like: “If you don’t brush every day, you will lose your teeth.” That simple, right? A fact of life. Well, if you don’t learn how to express your anger, frustration, irritation, or fury….you have two choices. You will get sick, like heart problems, headaches, indigestion, ulcers, cancer, alcoholism…the list goes on……… Or you will say and do things to people that will cause you untold damage, like loss of relationship or loss of job. You will blurt mean things out to others, that you will regret. Or you will get back at others in passive-aggressive ways that only make matters worse. Thus, there is no choice for the emotionally healthy human…we must learn to tell others that their behavior is not working for us in a respectful way that is also effective, a way that usually does not cause them to become defensive. there is a way…….assertive statements. We can not hold in the anger or ignore it………………..we must express it in healthy ways.
